How Energy Efficient Are You At Work?

How energy efficient are you at work?

Did you know that cutting your business’ energy costs by 20% equates to the same bottom-line benefit as a 5% increase in sales?


Whether you’re a business owner yourself, or an employee, you should be doing all you can to help reduce your energy usage. Whilst each initiative might be small, they can result in big savings. For example, for every 1°C of overheating, the cost of heating rises by 8%!

How many of these things do you do?

1. Turn off the lights when you leave an empty room
2. Use computers with built-in energy-saving features
3. Only open a window if the aircon is switched off
4. Heat the building in zones to adjust temperatures in different areas
5. Switch photocopiers off overnight and on weekends
6. Have replaced all standard (tungsten) lightbulbs with energy-efficient bulbs
7. Only turn the aircon on when it’s over 20°C
8. Only run the dishwasher when it’s full
9. Encourage others to turn off lights in empty rooms
10. If you’re photocopying documents, run them in batches
11. Keep hot water tanks, boilers, pipework and valves insulated

18. Have time switches on your extractor fans
19. Switch off your computer overnight and on weekends
20. Avoid using portable heaters wherever possible
21. Seal windows and doors that aren’t used to avoid drafts
22. Turn off your monitors overnight and on weekends
23. Switched the workplace kettle for a hot water tap
24. Have installed insulation in the roof, skylights and cavity walls
25. Have photocopiers situated in areas that are naturally ventilated
26. Activate energy-saving mode on printers when not in use
27. Have a smart meter installed
28. Turn the heating off when the building is unoccupied
29. Regularly monitor your energy consumption - or ask managers to
30. Encourage other employees to be committed to saving energy
