Getting Ready for MHHS: What Businesses Need to Know

MHHS (Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement)
This is a big change for the energy industry, and here’s how suppliers and the wider market are getting ready for MHHS to make the rollout as smooth as possible for businesses. 

Implementation complexity 
The transition to MHHS involves significant updates to industry systems, supplier IT infrastructure, and metering service arrangements. As these changes are introduced, there may be some operational and transitional challenges for both suppliers and customers. 

Dependence on smart metering 
Businesses without a functioning smart meter that can provide half-hourly data may not be able to fully benefit from MHHS until any necessary meter upgrades have been completed. In some locations, there may also be practical or logistical challenges. 

Billing change management 
As new systems are introduced, some customers may notice small changes to invoice layouts or billing timelines. Clear communication and support will be provided throughout the transition.   

MHHS Rollout Timeline for B2B Customers 

The MHHS Programme will be rolled out in phases, with clear milestones for moving to the new settlement arrangements. The timeline below follows the official industry schedule and applies to both domestic and business (B2B) electricity customers. 

Key MHHS Milestones: 

• Late 2025: Programme systems went live 
  Central industry systems for MHHS will be ready, enabling supplier migration activities to begin.  

• October 2026: Supplier qualification 
  All suppliers must have completed qualification, meaning their systems must be fully capable of operating under the new MHHS Target Operating Model.  

• October 2025 to May 2027: Migration window 
  Suppliers will progressively migrate customer Meter Point Administration Numbers (MPANs) including business meters, to calculate energy uses every half hour.  

• May 2027: Migration completion 
  All meter points should be migrated into MHHS, with supplier systems and data flows operating under the new model.  

• July 2027: Settlement switch fully in place 
  All electricity markets will be operating under MHHS and using half-hourly data for settlement. This represents the full transition to the new arrangements.

While many larger businesses with half-hourly meters already have their energy usage measured every half hour under the current system, MHHS will extend this to all energy customers. It also standardises the process across the market, so everyone’s energy usage is calculated in the same way. 

What Has Already Changed? 

Bills now show the metering information needed for MHHS:

The new format:

• Retains the Profile Class ID
• Replaces Meter Timeswitch Code (MTC) with Standard Settlement Configuration (SSC) ID
• Replaces Line Loss Factor Configuration (LLFC) ID with DUoS Tariff ID
