Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) FAQs For Businesses

MHHS FAQs For Businesses: We answer key questions about Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement, helping you understand how it works, when it’s being introduced, and what it means for billing, smart meters, and your business energy strategy.

Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) is an industry-wide upgrade to the electricity system. It means electricity usage will be settled using actual half-hourly meter readings instead of estimated usage.

This improves billing accuracy, supports smarter tariffs, and helps create a more modern and flexible energy system.

MHHS is being introduced to:

  • Improve the accuracy of electricity billing
  • Reduce reliance on estimated usage
  • Support smarter and more flexible energy tariffs
  • Create a more efficient electricity system across Great Britain

No. MHHS does not change your contract terms, agreed prices, or contract end date.

It is a behind-the-scenes system change across the electricity industry and does not affect your commercial agreement with us.

No. MHHS itself does not increase prices.

However, your future costs will still depend on your energy usage and tariff, as they do today.

Most customers will not notice immediate changes.

Over time, bills may include more detailed usage information, especially if you move onto time-based or flexible tariffs. We will always explain any changes clearly in advance.

In most cases, no action is needed. If anything is required (such as a meter upgrade), we’ll contact you directly and guide you through it.

If you already have a smart or advanced meter that can send half-hourly readings, you don’t need to do anything.

If any changes are needed, we’ll contact you directly and guide you through the process.

To benefit fully from MHHS, your meter needs to be able to provide half-hourly readings.

If you don’t currently have a smart or advanced meter, we may contact you about upgrading. This helps ensure more accurate billing and access to future tariff options.

In some cases, a smart meter may not be suitable due to signal, technical, or site limitations.

If this applies to you, we’ll work with you to find the best available solution. You will not be disconnected, however some future tariff options may be limited without half-hourly data.

No. Your payment method (for example, Direct Debit) will remain the same unless we notify you otherwise.

The transition begins in late 2025, with customers gradually moving across between October 2025 and May 2027.

Not all customers will move at the same time, as the industry rollout is being carried out in stages.

If you move premises, your new supply will be managed under the same industry MHHS framework, depending on the timing and meter setup at the new site.

A smart or advanced business meter automatically sends half-hourly readings, which means:

  • More accurate billing
  • Reduced need for manual meter reads
  • Better insight into energy usage
  • Access to more flexible tariff options in the future
